What is whitewater rafting, exactly?

Unlike kayaking or canoeing, rafting requires no prior knowledge of boat handling or rolls: the team paddles together on the guide's commands, and the guide steers the boat and chooses the line. That makes it the most accessible form of whitewater sport for groups without prior experience.

How big is a rafting boat?

Commercial rafts are typically 4–5 metres long and 2–2.5 metres wide; the most common configurations are R6 (5 guests + 1 guide) and R8 (7 guests + 1 guide). On technical water (WW III–IV) outfitters prefer smaller R6 boats because they manoeuvre more nimbly; on high-volume rivers R8s are used to spread the load across more paddle power. The dry weight of an empty 13-foot raft is 25–35 kg depending on material.

What is the difference between rafting and kayaking?

In a kayak, one person sits alone in a closed, rigid hull and steers it solely with a double-bladed paddle — a sport that demands its own technique (Eskimo roll, edging). In a raft, the whole group sits together in an inflatable boat under the guidance of a certified guide; capsizing is much less likely and self-rescue is simpler. Rafting is a team sport, kayaking is an individual sport.

How does rafting differ from canyoning?

Accepted Answer

Canyoning takes place in narrow rock gorges and combines rappelling, climbing, sliding and jumping — usually without a boat. Rafting plays out on the river itself, in a boat, and often covers significantly longer distances. Both activities can use the same river, but they differ fundamentally in equipment, technique and risk profile.

What is a self-bailing raft and why does it matter?

Modern whitewater rafts have perforated floors (called "self-bailers"): water that splashes into the boat from a wave drains back out through these openings on its own. That keeps the boat manoeuvrable and prevents it from filling with water and sinking. All boats we use on whitewater runs are self-bailing.

Do I have to paddle, or does the guide steer alone?

All guests paddle actively — that is the core of the sport. The guide gives clear commands (Forward, Back, Stop, High Side) which the team executes; it's the shared paddling moment that steers the boat through tight lines. If you don't want or can't paddle, ask about a guided oar-raft service in which the guide rows alone with long oars — but on our multi-day tours the format is always paddle raft.

What do the whitewater classes WW I to WW VI mean?

The International Canoe Federation (ICF) scale grades the hydraulic and technical difficulty of a river or section in six grades: WW I (easy — calm flow, almost no obstacles) up to WW VI (limit of navigability — generally not justifiable, runnable only by professionals under extreme conditions). Commercial rafting tours typically operate between WW II and WW IV.

What can I expect on a WW II–III section?

WW II means simple rapids with clear lines, regular waves up to about 0.5 m, and almost no obstacles in the main current — ideal for beginners and families. WW III offers higher, more irregular waves, holes and eddies that require active paddling but are well manageable with a guide. The Soča family route and the Sjoa beginner section are at this level.

From which class does rafting become genuinely demanding?

WW IV is considered the first competition level: lines are not obvious at first glance, requiring scouting and precise manoeuvring under time pressure. High, sustained waves, powerful holes and pressure water make an unintended swim a serious event. The Ötztaler Ache (WW IV+) and the Giarsun Gorge on the Inn (WW IV) sit in this range.

What does the "+" or "–" after a difficulty grade mean?

Accepted Answer

A plus sign (e.g. WW IV+) indicates that the section is harder than the main grade but does not reach the next full class; a minus sign means correspondingly easier. The qualifiers are informal and not defined by the ICF, but are an established convention in European rafting practice. WW IV+ is markedly more demanding than WW IV and absolutely requires prior experience.

Does the difficulty of a river change with the water level?

Yes — and that's a critical point. As the water level rises, current speed increases, waves grow larger and obstacles get washed over, which makes some passages broader and easier for rafts and others more dangerous (stronger holes, less reaction time). At the same time, very low water can expose hidden rocks and raise the technical level. We check the gauge readings of all rivers daily and adjust the put-in or route accordingly.

Why don't you offer WW V and VI on your tours?

Accepted Answer

WW V describes extremely demanding whitewater with long, dangerous sections where a swim is considered serious and even practiced swimmers face significant risk. WW VI is commercially de facto unrunnable. Responsibly curated rafting — especially with mixed groups — ends at the WW IV+ boundary. Sections above this level are portaged or are not part of our tours.

Question 13

Do I need to know how to swim?

Accepted Answer

Basic swimming ability is required for all of our tours: we define this as the ability to keep yourself afloat in deep water and cover about 25 m. You don't need to be a competition swimmer — the PFD keeps you up — but anyone who panics completely in the water endangers themselves and the group during a swim event. On WW IV and above we require solid swimming skills (basic float alone is not enough).

What physical fitness do I need?

For beginner and family tours on WW II–III, average everyday fitness is enough: you sit in the boat, paddle hard on command and need to be able to hold on with both hands if necessary. For demanding multi-day tours on WW III–IV (Sjoa, Inn, Ötztaler Ache) we recommend a base fitness equivalent to a 30-minute run — core strength and upper-body stability matter more than endurance.

Is there a minimum age?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the river and the difficulty. On family sections (WW I–II) we accept children from age 8 provided they are at least 120–125 cm tall and feel safe in the water. On more demanding tours (WW III–IV) the minimum age is 14–16; on extreme tours (Ötztaler Ache) 16 with documented prior experience. All minors require a signed consent form from a guardian.

Is there a maximum weight?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Most commercial outfitters set the limit at 130 kg body weight. Reason: PFDs and wetsuits are limited in availability at this size range, and the pull weight in a rescue must not exceed the capacity of a rescue line. Please give your weight honestly at booking — we'll find a discreet solution rather than have you disappointed at the riverbank.

Can I take part as an absolute beginner with no prior experience?

Accepted Answer

Yes — on our beginner and family runs (WW II–III) no prior experience is required. The full safety briefing, equipment introduction and paddle commands are explained on the bank before every trip. What you should bring: curiosity, team spirit and the ability to react to instructions.

How do I best prepare for a multi-day rafting expedition?

Three to four weeks before the tour we recommend: daily paddling practice (rowing, SUP or swimming), core strengthening (planks, rows), and — if possible — a beginner rafting tour on a local river to internalise commands and the body posture in the boat. Equally important: enough sleep before departure, no alcohol the evening before, and full honesty with the guide about medical history.

What do you provide — what do I bring myself?

We provide all safety-relevant equipment: raft, paddle, certified whitewater helmet (EN 1385), CE-certified PFD, wetsuit (trousers + jacket, typically 3–5 mm), neoprene socks and shoes, and paddle jacket. You bring: swimsuit/trunks (worn under the wetsuit), a pair of old sports shoes or sandals with heel strap for the way back, water-resistant sun and lip protection, a towel and change of clothes. Best to leave jewellery and watches in the safe.

What is the difference between a wetsuit and a drysuit?

Accepted Answer

A wetsuit (3–5 mm closed-cell rubber) lets a thin layer of water in which the body warms up — it protects against cold but not against being wet. A drysuit is fully waterproof with latex or rubber gaskets at the neck and wrists; insulating layers are worn underneath. For summer tours on most Alpine rivers a good wetsuit is enough. For spring runs with ice-water temperatures (Sjoa in May, Inn in June) we recommend drysuits — we provide them on those tours.

What does the EN 1385 standard say about my helmet?

Accepted Answer

EN 1385 (last revised 2012/2017) is the European standard for helmets in canoeing and whitewater sport. It defines minimum requirements for impact damping, field of view, chin-strap retention force and buoyancy. Important to know: the standard is designed for WW I–IV; from WW V onward the protective effect is no longer certified. All our helmets carry the EN 1385 certification and are inspected for damage after each season and replaced as needed.

Can I bring my own equipment?

Accepted Answer

Your own PFDs and helmets are welcome provided they meet EN 1385 (helmet) or EN ISO 12402-5 (PFD) and show no visible damage. The guide checks the equipment before departure. Your own wetsuits are also allowed; aim for at least 3 mm thickness for Alpine rivers with 8–14 °C water temperatures.

Can I take my smartphone or a camera onto the water?

Smartphones go in waterproof drybags — never loose in a vest pocket, since they fall out on impact with a wave. Action cameras (GoPro etc.) with a suitable mount on the helmet are allowed on most rivers; the guide will point out sections where your hands need to be free. Glasses wearers should use a sport-glasses retainer (croakie); contact-lens wearers should know that a swim event can mean the loss of the lenses.

How safe is rafting really?

Commercial rafting with certified guides on graded rivers is statistically far safer than many other outdoor activities. The accident risk is real but manageable: the vast majority of incidents are short, self-terminating swim events without injury. Critical accidents almost always result from disregarding safety rules, excessive water levels or uncertified operators. We don't run tours when the gauge is outside our safety limits.

What happens if I fall out of the boat?

Accepted Answer

The safety briefing before every trip covers exactly this case. The base rule: immediately take the defensive position — on your back, feet downstream and at the surface, arms out for balance. That way you bounce off rocks with your feet rather than risk your head. On the guide's command you switch to the active swim position (on your stomach, strong strokes) towards the boat or the bank. The guide will throw you a throwbag if needed — hold the rope tight.

What is a throwbag?

Accepted Answer

A throwbag is a bag filled with floating polypropylene rope (typically 15–25 m of rope, 8–10 mm diameter) that the guide can throw accurately to a swimmer from the bank or boat. Once you grab the rope, you swing in a pendulum arc to the bank. Throwbags are carried on every guided whitewater run; our lead boat carries at least two.

What rescue standards apply to your guides?

Accepted Answer

All of our guides hold at least IRF GTE Level 3 (Raft Guide Level 3, suitable for whitewater up to WW IV) plus a Swiftwater Rescue qualification. Guides on WW IV+ runs hold IRF Level 4 or national equivalents. Additionally, every guide is trained in wilderness first aid (Wilderness First Responder or equivalent certification). IRF certificates are valid for three years and must be combined with a current first-aid credential.

What is the IRF GTE certification system?

The International Rafting Federation (IRF) operates the world's only internationally recognised guide certification system (Guide Training & Education, GTE). It comprises five levels: Level 1–2 for calmer water, Level 3 for WW III–IV, Level 4 for WW IV–V, Level 5 (Instructor/Assessor) for training other guides. Many countries have adopted the IRF system as their national standard. For our rivers (WW III–IV+) Level 3–4 is the mandatory standard.

Do you run with a safety kayak?

On all tours from WW III upward we deploy at least one safety kayak, crewed by an IRF-certified safety boater. The safety boater is exclusively responsible for recovering swimmers and lost gear — they don't paddle as a lead boat but position themselves strategically below dangerous spots. On WW IV+ runs we always go with two safety kayaks.

What happens in an emergency — how fast does help arrive?

Each of our guide teams carries a waterproof emergency kit with first-aid material, rescue blankets and a communication device (satellite phone or VHF radio). Before every tour the nearest rescue dispatch and helicopter landing zones are documented. All routes have predefined evacuation points reachable by vehicle. In case of serious injury we immediately call the local emergency number (EU: 112).

When is the best season for whitewater rafting in the Alps and Scandinavia?

Accepted Answer

The Alpine rafting season typically runs from April to September/October. The character varies considerably: in May/June the rivers carry a lot of water from the snowmelt, which brings powerful waves and higher difficulty — ideal for the experienced. From July the levels slowly drop, the water warms up, and conditions become more family-friendly. In Norway (Sjoa) the main season starts at the end of May and runs to early September.

What is snowmelt and why does it change the tour?

Snowmelt refers to runoff from melting snow in the high mountains, typically lasting from April to July depending on the elevation of the catchment area. It massively raises the discharge (flow in m³/s), increases current speed, makes waves larger, and can lift the difficulty of a section by one or two grades. At the same time, meltwater is consistently cold (4–8 °C) — an important factor in equipment choice.

How do you read the gauge, and at what point do you cancel a tour?

Accepted Answer

We check water levels daily via official gauge stations (e.g. HND Bayern, NVE Norway, ARSO Slovenia). Each river section has safety limits we've defined in centimetres (gauge) or cubic metres per second (discharge). If the upper limit (high water) is exceeded or the lower limit (too shallow, rock risk) is undercut, we postpone the tour or switch to an alternative section. You'll be informed at the latest 48 hours before departure.

Can a tour be cancelled at short notice due to flooding?

Accepted Answer

Yes — that's a real and important situation to plan for. Alpine rivers can rise by several metres within hours after heavy rain. In safety-critical floods we cancel without exception. In that case we offer an alternative date, a different section in the same region, or a full refund of the tour price. We strongly recommend trip insurance with a natural-event clause for multi-day trips.

When is the water warmest — and comfort highest?

Accepted Answer

July and August offer the highest water temperatures on most rivers (10–16 °C, depending on river and glacier share). The Soča warms up to 14 °C in midsummer, the Verzasca to 12–16 °C. The Inn and Ötztaler Ache, glacier-fed, stay at 8–10 °C even in August. On the Sjoa in Norway the water temperature rarely climbs above 10 °C even in July — drysuit is the first choice there.

How far in advance should I book?

Accepted Answer

Our multi-day expedition tours are limited to small groups (6–12 people) and in the high season (July/August) often book out months ahead. We recommend booking at least 8–12 weeks before the desired date, and earlier still for groups of 6 or more. Spontaneous solo or day tours can be booked at shorter notice, depending on availability — just ask.

Question 37

How high is the deposit, and what happens to it?

Accepted Answer

We take a deposit of 30% of the tour price to confirm your booking. This deposit is non-refundable if you cancel less than 30 days before tour start (except in cases where we cancel the tour for safety reasons). The balance is due 30 days before departure. If you book within 30 days of the start date, the full price is due immediately.

What are your cancellation fees?

Accepted Answer

Cancellations more than 60 days before tour start: full refund minus booking fee. 30–60 days before: 50% of the tour price retained. Less than 30 days: no refund. If we cancel for high water: full refund or free switch to an alternative date. These terms match the standard in the commercial whitewater industry.

Do I need trip cancellation insurance?

Accepted Answer

Strongly recommended for multi-day tours. Whitewater rafting on Alpine rivers is weather-dependent; high or low water and extreme events can change or cancel tours at short notice. Add to that travel costs (transport, accommodation), which we do not cover in case of sudden cancellation. Make sure your policy explicitly includes outdoor activities up to WW IV and recognises natural events as a valid cancellation reason.

Is there a minimum number of participants?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our multi-day tours require at least 4 paying participants to operate cost-effectively. If we fall below the minimum we'll inform you no later than 21 days before the tour start and offer an alternative date or a full refund. Private bookings (exclusive group) are not subject to this restriction.

Can I book a tour as a private exclusive group?

Accepted Answer

Yes — private bookings for exclusive groups (e.g. corporate events, birthdays, stag parties) are possible and arranged on request with a dedicated guide team. Minimum: 6 people. For large groups (10+) we plan multiple boats so nobody waits, and the guide-to-guest ratio stays at a maximum of 1:6.

How do I get to the camp?

Each of our rivers comes with detailed travel information and GPS coordinates of the meeting point. Sjoa (Norway): travel via Oslo with train to Otta (3.5 h) or rental car; camp is in Nedre Heidal. Soča (Slovenia): fly to Ljubljana or Trieste, then rental car to Bovec (2–2.5 h). Inn Engadin (Switzerland): train via Zürich to Scuol-Tarasp (Rätische Bahn). Ötztaler Ache: Innsbruck airport, then 40 min into the Ötztal. We recommend a rental car for maximum flexibility.

Is accommodation included in the tour price?

On our multi-day expedition tours, accommodation (cabin, guesthouse or campground depending on river and tour type) is included. The exact accommodation format is given in each tour description. Solo bookers are placed in shared rooms; couples and groups can book double rooms for an extra charge.

On multi-day tours, breakfast and dinner are included; lunch on the river (lunch pack) likewise. We use local ingredients from the region where possible. Dietary needs (vegan, gluten-free, allergies) please indicate at booking — we'll handle them reliably, but not at short notice.

Sjoa, Soča (Bovec) and Inn (Scuol) are well connected by train and long-distance bus. The Ötztaler Ache (Sautens/Haiming) is reachable by train to Ötztal Bahnhof and shuttle. The Verzasca in Ticino is well served by bus from Locarno/Tenero. We're happy to coordinate shuttles from the nearest station to the camp if you flag it at booking.

What makes the Sjoa in Norway special?

The Sjoa is considered Scandinavia's premier whitewater river. It rises from Lake Gjende in Jotunheimen National Park and flows through 98 km of granite-shaped tundra landscape. The riverbed is deep and largely free of rocks, which makes swims less dangerous than in shallower limestone rivers. The various sections offer WW II to WW IV+; in spring (May–June, snowmelt) it's demanding at WW III–IV, in summer (July–August) family- and beginner-friendly at WW II–III. Water temperature: 8–12 °C, drysuit recommended.

What can I expect on the Verzasca in Ticino?

The Verzasca is a classic pool-drop river: calm, deep emerald pools followed by short, intense steps (drops) with a clear line. The substrate is white granite and gneiss, which gives the Verzasca its characteristic turquoise-green colour. Rafting sections range between WW III and WW IV+; the river is season-dependent (main season May–October) and at low levels it's too shallow for rafts. The Valle Verzasca is a UNESCO biosphere and counts among the most beautiful whitewater rivers in the Alps.

What is special about the Soča in Slovenia?

The Soča is a limestone river par excellence: its water is so clear and emerald-green you can see deep into the bottom from a hanging bridge. It rises in Triglav National Park and flows through narrow limestone gorges of the Julian Alps. Characteristic are long, clear pool-drop sequences at WW II–IV, depending on section and season. Rafting season: April to October; the best time for whitewater is spring and early summer. The Soča is even runnable at very low levels because it's fed by underground springs — making it one of Europe's most reliable rivers.

Why is the Ötztaler Ache considered one of the most demanding rafting rivers in Europe?

Accepted Answer

The Ötztaler Ache is a high-volume glacier river — fed by two glaciers of the Ötztal main ridge. That means: very high current speed, sustained holes and stopper waves that leave hardly any time for corrections. The classic rafting section (Oetz–Haiming, about 14 km) is graded WW IV–IV+ and hosts the Sickline Extreme Kayak Championship. Guided rafting here is restricted to experienced guests (prior experience required), minimum age 16. Season: May to September, water temperature about 8–10 °C.

Why is the Inn in the Engadin attractive for rafting?

The Inn (Engadinisch: En) is the highest-volume Alpine river in Switzerland and on its Engadin section offers a rare combination: dramatic dolomite and granite gorges (Giarsun Gorge, Scuol Gorge) with WW III–IV water that holds reliably all summer. The Giarsun Gorge counts among the finest whitewater runs in the Alps — continuous WW IV sections in a gorge accessible only by raft. The Inn lies in the Swiss National Park; environmental rules are correspondingly strict.

What can I expect on the Sesia in Piedmont?

The Sesia rises from the Monte Rosa massif and flows through the "greenest valley of Italy" (Valsesia) within a UNESCO Global Geopark area. The river is known for its crystal-clear water and offers WW III–IV on various sections. The best rafting season is April to September, with the highest water level in spring (snowmelt from Monte Rosa). The Sesia has hosted Italian national rafting championships several times — a quality marker for the river.

From what age is rafting suitable for children?

On calm family sections (WW I–II) children from 6 years can come along, provided they are at least 110–120 cm tall and not afraid of the water. For WW II–III runs we recommend from 8 years; children must have reached basic swimming level. All children's helmets and PFDs are provided in matching child sizes. Children under 16 always travel in the same boat as a guardian.

Is rafting suitable for seniors?

There is no upper age limit — what matters is physical fitness and a normal cardiovascular system. Many of our most enthusiastic regulars are over 60. We recommend that seniors with pre-existing conditions (knee, back, cardiac issues) speak briefly with their family doctor before booking and inform us openly of any limitations — then we'll find the right section together.

What should I keep in mind for a stag/bachelor trip?

Rafting is an excellent stag trip — with one clear condition: no alcohol before or during the tour. The guide can and will exclude participants under the influence of alcohol or drugs without refund. Plan the celebration for the evening after the tour. We have experience with stag groups and are happy to organise the framing (grill, cabin, local beer after the run).

Can my group include both beginners and advanced rafters at the same time?

Accepted Answer

Yes — on rivers with multiple sections (Sjoa, Soča, Inn) we can split mixed groups across different boats: advanced on the more demanding upper run, beginners on the more accessible lower run, meet in the camp in the evening. That requires two guide teams but is arrangeable on request.

What is your stance on environmental protection on the river?

Accepted Answer

We follow strict "Leave No Trace" principles on all tours: no plastic on the river, all waste packed out completely (Pack-it-in, Pack-it-out), campfires only at designated sites and in fire pans. The riparian ecosystem — especially grayling and trout spawning grounds — must not be entered or disturbed. We actively train all guides in river ecology.

Do you work with local outfitters?

Yes — a core principle of our expedition philosophy. On all rivers we work with local rafting operators or local guides rather than exporting our own infrastructure into foreign regions. That strengthens local economies, secures ecologically grounded local knowledge, and is a key feature of the "slow tourism" approach we follow.

How do you offset the carbon footprint of your tours?

We measure each tour's travel CO₂ footprint (group transport, shuttle drives) and offset it through certified projects (Gold Standard or Plan Vivo). We also prefer rivers reachable by train and actively communicate climate-friendly travel options. Long-term we engage in the protection of the wild rivers we run — through membership in the International Rafting Federation and support of local conservation projects.

Which rivers on your tours are under special protection?

Accepted Answer

The Soča flows through Triglav National Park (Slovenia) — strict rules on access and boat numbers apply here. The Inn in the Engadin lies in the Swiss National Park; navigation permits are quota-based. The Sjoa is not formally protected but is subject to voluntary agreements among local outfitters on boat numbers and seasonal timing. The Sesia lies in the Valle Sesia UNESCO Global Geopark. We comply strictly with all local permit obligations.

Which conditions exclude participation?

Accepted Answer

Absolute exclusions on WW III+ tours: uncontrolled epilepsy, severe heart failure (NYHA III–IV), recent heart attack or stroke (less than 6 months ago), severe uncontrolled hypertension and any condition that can cause sudden loss of consciousness. These exclusions aren't bureaucratic hurdles but protection: a loss-of-consciousness event in whitewater is highly dangerous for the affected person and for the group.

Can I go rafting with asthma?

Controlled asthma is generally not a disqualifier — let us know before the tour and carry your inhaler in a waterproof pouch on the PFD. Cold-water-induced asthma (bronchospasm from cold contact) is a real risk on glacier rivers; discuss it with your physician and tell the guide at the briefing. Uncontrolled or severe asthma requires medical clearance.

I'm diabetic — what do I need to consider?

Well-controlled type 1 or type 2 diabetes is not a basic exclusion.
